“Following discussions between host country authorities and FIFA, a decision has been made to focus the sale of alcoholic beverages on the FIFA Fan Festival, other fan destinations and licensed venues, removing sales points of beer from Qatar’s FIFA World Cup 2022 stadium perimeters,” FIFA said in a statement
The announcement comes just two days before the tournament starts, with Qatar performing a late U-turn having initially just instructed sponsors Budweiser to scale down beer stands at all eight venues.
Budweiser, a major World Cup sponsor with exclusive rights to sell beer at the tournament, was to sell alcoholic beer within the ticketed perimeter surrounding each of the eight stadiums three hours before and one hour after each game.
However, after the reversal fans will be restricted to drinking in official zones where beer sales will only be allowed between certain times with prices set at around $14 per half pint, and in licenced hotels and restaurants
The sale of alcohol is strictly controlled in Qatar and it will no longer be available in or around any of the stadiums for the duration of the tournament.
