Cameron Sutton, a former player for the Detroit Lions, has surrendered himself to Florida authorities to address allegations of domestic violence, more than three weeks after an arrest warrant was issued.
According to ESPN, the warrant was issued on March 7, and authorities sought public assistance in locating Sutton on March 20. On Sunday, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) in Tampa confirmed that Sutton, 29, had been taken into custody.
Sutton is facing accusations of domestic battery by strangulation. Following a police appeal, the Lions released Sutton, a defensive back, on March 21.
His attorney had previously indicated that Sutton would turn himself in to authorities in Tampa on March 25. However, he did not report to Orient Road Jail until 8:24 PM local time on Sunday, as stated by HCSO in a statement.
Sheriff Chad Chronister remarked, “After weeks of evading law enforcement, this man has finally made the right choice to turn himself in. Domestic violence has no place in our community, and no one is above the law here in Hillsborough County. My thoughts are with this woman as she continues to heal from this man’s gruesome actions.”
Domestic battery by strangulation is categorized as a third-degree offense and carries a potential punishment of up to five years in prison.
In 2023, the Lions signed Sutton to a three-year contract worth $33 million (£26.1 million) after he joined from the Pittsburgh Steelers. He started all 17 regular-season games and three playoff games last season.
