Cole Palmer netted in the 77th minute to give the lead to the Sky Blues, but Leandro Trossard scored to tie the clash in the 101st minute – 11 minutes into added time and forced shootout.
The extra time of the 2nd half was 8 minutes, but because of injury that involved Kyle Walker and Thomas Partey, official Stuart Attwell gave an additional time to the additional time.
According to the new rules, referees must add additional time for each delay during the match, including injuries.
“I’m not happy, but we will have to get used to it,” the Man. City manager claimed after the defeat. “I think, not because we had a 1-0 lead, it was just that I had a feeling that much didn’t happen to give 8 additional minutes to the 2nd half.
“They made the time rule changing without consulting the head coaches and with the players.”
