Rodri (27) has appeared in 41 matches this campaign and shared after Tuesday’s UCL draw against Los Blancos in Madrid that his club was planning on resting him.
Manchester City face Luton Town at home in an EPL match tomorrow.
“If a footballer doesn’t want to play, then he’s not going to be on the pitch. It’s simple,” said the Sky Blues boss.
The Champions League 3-3 draw against Real Madrid in their ¼ final 1st leg made it 429 days and 66 games since Rodri lost a match playing for the Sky Blues in any tournament.
Across Europe’s top 5 leagues, only 3 footballers have made more starts than Rodri this campaign: the Gunners defender William Saliba (42 starts) and 2 goalkeepers.
The Spaniard has missed 4 domestic matches through suspension this campaign, with the Sky Blues losing all of them.
