Marketa Vondrousova’s Wimbledon title defence ended abruptly with a surprise first-round defeat by Spain’s Jessica Bouzas Maneiro. Vondrousova, who made history last year as the first unseeded player to win the women’s singles title by triumphing over Ons Jabeur, struggled significantly in her opening match on Centre Court.

The 25-year-old Czech’s game was plagued by unforced errors and double faults, leading to a lacklustre performance. Bouzas Maneiro, ranked 83rd in the world and just 21 years old, capitalized on Vondrousova’s mistakes to secure a 6-4, 6-2 victory. This win marked Bouzas Maneiro’s first Grand Slam victory.

This defeat makes Vondrousova the first women’s defending champion to lose in the first round at Wimbledon since Steffi Graf’s loss to Lori McNeil in 1994. Her early exit ensures there will be a new women’s singles champion at Wimbledon for the seventh consecutive year.
