Kylian Mbappe, France’s national team captain, has come under fire in his home country for opting out of Les Bleus’ Nations League matches against Israel and Belgium, despite being fit enough to play for Real Madrid. The 25-year-old forward, who recently returned from a muscle injury, featured in Real Madrid’s Champions League match last week and started their La Liga game against Villarreal on Saturday.
France coach Didier Deschamps omitted Mbappe from the squad, citing his lack of match fitness and preparation, as the player had not played enough games since recovering from his injury. However, this decision has sparked criticism, with former France international Maxime Bossis commenting to L’Equipe: “Either you’re injured, and you don’t play for your club or country, or you’re fit and available for both. It’s confusing when a player returns for their club but misses national team duty.”
The situation is further complicated by Mbappe’s leadership role as captain, a title he received over Antoine Griezmann, who recently retired from international football. Griezmann’s unwavering commitment, exemplified by his record of playing 84 consecutive matches for France between 2017 and 2024, stands in contrast to the questions now surrounding Mbappe’s availability and loyalty to Les Bleus.
