Athletic Bilbao fan suffered a cardiac arrest during the game

The match between Granada and Athletic Bilbao was interrupted in the 20th minute due to the need for emergency medical attention for a fan in the stands. It was later announced that he suffered cardiorespiratory arrest and passed away, which made the referee and both teams to agree to postpone the game.

“LaLiga and the two clubs have agreed to call off the match due to the death of a fan at Los Cármenes. Athletic Club expresses its deepest condolences. Our thoughts are with the person’s family and loved ones.,” Athletic Bilbao wrote on “X”.

The goalkeeper of the Basque team, Unay Simon, informed the referee about what was happening and the match was immediately stopped. Doctors from both clubs went to the scene to intervene, but moments later returned to their benches while the spectator in question continued to be attended to by the doctor on duty.

After a few minutes of waiting and uncertainty, both teams made their way to the locker room tunnel, following the instructions of the referees.

At the time of the incident, Ernesto Valverde’s side were leading 1-0 thanks to a goal from Inaki Williams in the 6th minute.
