The Netherlands struggled throughout the match and the African champions, missing their leading striker Sadio Mane, created some promising opportunities.
However, a moment of confusion between Chelsea’s Edouard Mendy and his defenders allowed PSV Eindhoven winger Gakpo to open the scoring on 84 minutes with a header after Frenkie De Jong’s pinpoint cross.
Another error by Mendy, who failed to hold on to Memphis Depay’s shot saw Davy Klaassen getting the rebound and hitting the back of the net in the 10th minute of stoppage time.
