Philadelphia rallied to beat Boston by only a single point.

Tyrese Maxey finished with 40 points and VJ Edgecombe scored 34 in his NBA debut to help the Philadelphia 76ers rally to defeat the Boston Celtics 117-116 in their campaign opener.

Edgecombe notched the most points in a debut in the league since Wilt Chamberlain had 43 on October 24th, 1959.

The 76ers led by 4 with 22 seconds until the end of the match, but were down to 1 when VJ missed 2 free throws with almost 10 seconds on the clock. Payton Pritchard had the chance twice to score and lead Boston to the triumph, but he missed both.

Joel Embiid was on the court for the 1st time since February, finishing with 4 points on 1-of-9 shooting. He also had 6 boards in 20 minutes as he returns after a 2024-25 campaign, when he appeared in only 19 matches because of different injuries.

Jaylen Brown returned from a hamstring problem in the preseason finale to notch 25 points. Brown is expected to be the Celtics’ leader this season as the franchise superstar Jayson Tatum is out with an ACL injury.

Philadelphia will play next against the Hornets at home, while Boston will travel to the Big Apple for a match against the Knicks.
