Andy Murray Monte Carlo event was short-lived as the 35-year old succumbed to an early exit 6-1, 6-3 to 14th seed Alex De Minaur.
It was a lacklustre display from the British star as he was totally outplayed by his much more agile and effective opponent. It took the Australian only 34 minutes to clinch the first set. In the second there were no difficulties for him as he was able to serve for the match and clinch it with the first match point. He will face Jan-Lennard Struff in the next round.
Elsewhere, Stan Wawrinka put on an impressive performance to turn the match around against Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor. Wawrinka lost the first set but staged a comeback to clinch the match 5-7, 6-3, 6-4. He will face Taylor Fritz in the next round.
Dominic Thiem breeze past the French veteran Richard Gasquet 6-1, 6-4, without having to face a break point. Thiem, who is currently seeded 106th will play 6th seeded Holger Rune.
On Tuesday both Novak Djokovic and Stefanos Tsitsipas start their journey for a third trophy at this event. Djokovic will play Russian Ivan Gakhov, while Tsitsipas takes on the Frenchman Benjamin Bonzi.
