The deal is record-breaking for a sale of US-based sports franchise, surpassing the $6.05 billion paid for the NFL’s Washington Commanders in 2023

The NBA has given unanimous approval for the sale of the Boston Celtics to a consortium led by billionaire investor Bill Chisholm, in a deal that shatters the record for the most expensive purchase of an American professional sports team. The agreement values the 18-time NBA champions at over $6.1 billion, with the total potentially climbing to $7.3 billion by 2028 when Chisholm assumes full control.

Once finalized, the purchase will eclipse the $6.05 billion paid for the NFL’s Washington Commanders in 2023 and easily surpass the NBA record of $4 billion set by Matt Ishbia’s acquisition of the Phoenix Suns that same year.

Chisholm, head of the private equity firm Symphony Technology Group, will take an initial 51% stake in the Celtics, alongside a group of minority investors. The shares are being acquired from the Grousbeck family, who have owned the storied franchise since 2002 and oversaw two championship runs, in 2008 and 2024.

Under their stewardship, the Celtics cemented their status as the most decorated team in NBA history, tied with the Los Angeles Lakers at 18 titles. With Chisholm set to lead the next chapter, the sale marks a seismic shift for one of basketball’s most iconic brands—both on and off the court.
