Newcastle United defender Sven Botman faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines, with the Premier League club confirming he will be out of action for six to nine months due to a serious knee injury, as announced on Wednesday.
The 24-year-old Dutchman, who joined St James’ Park from Ligue 1 side Lille in 2022, suffered the injury during his team’s 2-0 defeat in the FA Cup quarter-final against Manchester City last weekend.
Botman is scheduled to undergo Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) surgery next week. Newcastle provided an update, stating, “A scan has confirmed that he sustained an injury to his ACL.”
The statement continued, “The Dutch centre back sustained a knee injury in September 2023 and elected for a non-surgical rehabilitation plan – a decision which saw him return to action in December.”

The club expressed their well wishes for Botman’s recovery, saying, “Everyone at Newcastle United wishes Sven a full and speedy recovery.”
Newcastle is already grappling with injuries to several key players, including Nick Pope, Joelinton, Callum Wilson, Harvey Barnes, and Kieran Trippier. Despite these setbacks, they sit 10th in the Premier League standings with 10 matches remaining and are set to host seventh-placed West Ham United on March 30th.
