The 31-year-old will undergo a surgery to heal the issue and he now faces a race against time to return for the Euro 2024.
“We anticipate he’ll be operated on,” Newcastle manager Eddie Howe said. “There’s no doubt he needs an operation – so he will be out for a period of time, we think around four months.”
In relation to that rumors have emerged that David de Gea might find himself as best replacement, but Howe dismissed such claims, stating that he and the club fully back second keeper Martin Dubravka.
Newcastle also have Loris Karius, who faced Manchester United in the Carabao Cup final last season, and Mark Gillespie among their goalkeeping ranks though the latter has yet to play a league game since returning to the club in 2020.
