NHL Draft 2025: Martone to Follow in the Footsteps of NHL Greats
The 2025 Upper Deck NHL Draft, set to take place on June 27-28 at the Peacock Theater in L.A. Live, Los Angeles, will spotlight a wealth of talent, including Brampton’s Porter Martone. This right-wing player from the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) expressed his desire to model his game after power forwards like Matthew Tkachuk of the Florida Panthers and Corey Perry of the Edmonton Oilers.
“Witnessing Matthew Tkachuk against Corey Perry in the Stanley Cup Final underscores the value of a power forward,” Martone shared on the “NHL Draft Class” podcast. “Their skill level is impressive, and the way Corey Perry pairs with Connor McDavid is remarkable. That’s the type of player I aim to become in the NHL.”
Martone’s High Ranking Among OHL Contingent
Martone, who boasts a height of 6-foot-3 and weighs 204 pounds, is among the 64 OHL players featuring in the NHL Central Scouting’s final ranking of North American skaters and goaltenders. The list includes 10 potential first-round picks, with Martone securing the 6th position. Erie defenseman Matthew Schaefer tops the ranking.
Top OHL Prospects Discussed on “NHL Draft Class” Podcast
Adam Kimelman and Mike G. Morreale, co-hosts of the “NHL Draft Class” podcast, were joined by Nick Smith from NHL Central Scouting. They discussed several top OHL players likely to be picked early, including Schaefer, Martone, Saginaw center Michael Misa (No. 2), Brantford center Jake O’Brien (No. 4), Sault Ste. Marie center Brady Martin (No. 11), and Kitchener defenseman Cameron Reid (No. 23).
Smith, a former center, praised Misa’s 200-foot game, highlighting his penalty killing ability, skating skills, and intelligence both with and without the puck. He commended Misa for improving his stock by playing in the middle, predicting that’s where he’ll fit in at the next level.

Kimelman and Morreale also speculated about the decisions Nashville Predators and Philadelphia Flyers might make with their 5th and 6th picks, respectively. The “NHL Draft Class” podcast is available for free on all podcast platforms, including iTunes and Spotify, the NHL app, and here.
