Manchester City’s Rodri has achieved football’s most prestigious individual honor, the 2024 Ballon d’Or, following an outstanding 2023/24 season. Rodri’s impressive contributions helped Manchester City clinch the Premier League title and played a vital part in Spain’s UEFA European Championship-winning campaign over the summer. This victory marks the first time a Spaniard has won the award since Luis Suarez in 1960, and Rodri becomes the first Premier League player since Cristiano Ronaldo in 2008, as well as the first midfielder since Luka Modric in 2018, to claim the title.

The award ceremony in Paris saw Rodri attend on crutches, as he is currently sidelined for the season due to an ACL injury sustained in a match against Arsenal. Although Real Madrid’s Vinicius Junior was widely tipped to take the award, his stellar season, including 24 goals and 11 assists that helped Real Madrid achieve a Champions League and La Liga double, was ultimately outshone by Rodri’s accomplishments.
Vinicius, along with fellow Madrid nominee Jude Bellingham, did not attend the ceremony after being informed in advance. The Ballon d’Or reflects performances across the 2023/24 season, including achievements in major international tournaments like the UEFA European Championship and Copa America.
