In the Brisbane International final on Sunday, Elena Rybakina delivered a harsh reality check to Aryna Sabalenka ahead of her Australian Open title defense, securing a commanding 6-0, 6-3 victory. This final served as a rematch of last year’s Melbourne title-decider.
Despite Sabalenka entering the contest as the world number two and top seed, riding a 15-match winning streak in Australia, she found herself completely outplayed by the former Wimbledon champion on Pat Rafter Arena. Rybakina dominated the first set, securing it in just 24 minutes with three breaks of serve. Sabalenka, visibly frustrated, committed 12 unforced errors across the Queensland Tennis Centre showcourt.
The Kazakh continued her dominance by breaking Sabalenka early in the second set. Although there was a bit more resistance from Sabalenka, Rybakina ultimately claimed her sixth career title as the Belarusian sent another forehand wide. The victory served as a strong statement for Rybakina as she prepares for the upcoming Australian Open.
A trophy worthy of a smile 😉🏆
