The defeat left New Jersey 5 points behind the Capitals, who are in the East’s 8th and final postseason position. The Devils were defeated for just the 3rd time this campaign – 16-2-1 — when leading after the 1st period.
Sabres, at the same time, stayed mathematically in the race by climbing to the 12th position in the Eastern Conference, 1 point ahead of the Penguins but 6 behind Washington.
New Jersey will welcome the Penguins next week on Tuesday, while Buffalo will host the Maple Leafs tomorrow night.
