The New York Mets and reliever Devin Williams agreed to a 3-season, 51 million dollar contract, securing the organization a replacement for Edwin Diaz if the All-Star closer decides to continue his career elsewhere.
The deal has no opt-outs or options but features a 6 million dollar inking bonus spread over 3 campaigns.
Devin will bolster the back end of a bullpen that the team from the Big Apple is determined to improve substantially in the winter.
His role depends on whether the Mets re-sign Edwin, who opted out of his deal in November and is considered the top free agent reliever in the current offseason. The addition of Devin does not mean that Diaz will not continue his career with the Mets, and New York will do everything possible to convince him to return to the organization.
Williams began free agency after his lone campaign with the Yankees, as he was acquired a year ago from the Brewers. However, he was disappointing during his time with the Yankees in his 67 matches for them and was let go after the lone season.
