Unai Emery’s men headed into the game on a back-to-back winless matches, so they desperately needed a win to keep their title aspirations alive.
It was a comfortable start for the hosts as they emerged ahead through Leon Bailey’s strike. However, their enthusiasm was soon cut short as Burnley responded almost immediately thanks to a fine strike from Zeki Amdouni.
The Birmingham team went forward, pressing high and their efforts were soon rewarded as Moussa Diaby made it 2-0 just at the stroke of half-time.
The hosts received another boost as Vincent Kompany’s side was reduced to ten men as Sander Berge was dismissed for second booking. But against all odds it was Burnley, which came out with an equalizer in the 71st minute thanks to Lyle Foster.
A last-gasp penalty, taken calmly from Douglas Luiz, settled the matter and gave Villa vital win.
They now equal Liverpool tally of 42 points atop of the Premier League and jump over Arsenal.
