His agent reveals the details of his departure

Ahead of the Champions League clash between PSG and AC Milan, naturally one of the main talking points is Gianluigi Donnarumma. The Italian goalkeeper burst onto the stage with the Rossoneri at 16 years of age and quickly became fans’ favorite. Many of them even considered him to be a future club’s legend and a long-time captain.

During the 2020/21 season, though, the talks over his contract extension reached a deadlock and at the end he left the club as a free agent and Milan signed Mike Maignan to replace him. This frustrated Milan fans and it is expected they will not give a warm welcome to the goalkeeper in both their games against PSG.

According to his current agent, Vincenzo Raiola, Mino Raiola’s brother, Donnarumma was ready to wait for Milan’s offer on his new deal, but instead of a proposal, Paolo Maldini and Frederick Massara, who were sports directors back than, informed that they’ve already signed their new goalkeeper.

“Mino had the idea to send a message because Milan had not yet secured a place in the Champions League and the alternative, given our reluctance to leave Donnarumma for nothing, was for him to move on with another club, specifically Juventus, from where they would settle matters by player exchange or money. However, Maldini said: “Mino, we are here for something else. The chapter with Gianluigi is now closed because we have already signed our new goalkeeper”. This rock came down on Donnarumma’s head. We, in addition to Juve, who would have signed him after the end of the championship only if Milan had not qualified for the Champions League, had not studied the market for Gianluigi, who in January, in order not to betray Milan, did not even want to hear about any free agent transfer offers.”.
