Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali faces misconduct charges from the Football Association for suspected breaches of betting regulations.
The 23-year-old, who is currently serving a 10-month suspension imposed by the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) since October for violating betting regulations in Italy, has been accused by the FA of placing 50 bets on matches between August 12 and October 12, 2023.
Tonali made the switch to Newcastle from AC Milan in July for a transfer fee of £55 million. His previous ban from the FIGC was due to betting on matches involving his former clubs, Brescia and Milan, with FIFA granting the Italian federation’s request to extend the ban globally.
“Newcastle United acknowledges a misconduct charge received by Sandro Tonali in respect of alleged breaches of FA Betting Rules,” the club stated on Thursday.
“Sandro continues to fully comply with relevant investigations, and he retains the club’s full support.”
Due to his current suspension, Tonali is ineligible to participate in any matches until August, rendering him unavailable for Euro 2024.
