England manager Gareth Southgate will not be able to rely on James Maddison for the upcoming Euro 2024 qualifiers against Malta and North Macedonia. The midfielder has an ankle injury that has ruled him out of the squad, his club team Tottenham have confirmed.
The 26-year-old was substituted in first-half added time during Spurs’ 4-1 home loss to Chelsea and although initially the problem didn’t look too serious, new tests showed that the midfielder will be out for longer than expected.
Maddison joins a long Spurs injury list that also includes Micky van de Ven, Richarlison, Ivan Perisic, Ben Davies and Manor Solomon.

“We can confirm that James Maddison is out of the England squad due to an ankle injury,” Tottenham wrote in their statement earlier today, not mentioning how long he will be out of play.
Later team manager Angel Postecoglou confirmed that Van de Ven, Richarlison and Mddison’s injuries are serious. “Van de Ven will be out for couple of months, we knew it was serious one — looking to the New Year. Maddison, it’s a lot worse than we initially thought. Probably into the New Year to have him back. Richarlison should be out for a month”, he said.
