The Los Angeles Angels are appointing Kurt Suzuki as head coach, turning the longtime MLB catcher with no experience as a manager to help turn around an organization that has the longest postseason drought in North America.
Kurt (42) spent in the MLB 16 seasons as he was part of 5 organizations and lifted the World Series in 2019 as part of the Washington Nationals. Suzuki spent the last 3 seasons as a special assistant to Angels GM Perry Minasian.
Ex-Angels stars Albert Pujols and Torii Hunter were also among the candidates for the head coaching position to take the place of Ron Washington, who missed nearly half of this year after undergoing quadruple bypass surgery.
Ray Montgomery, the interim head coach, was offered a different position in the franchise, but not among the favorites to take the job full-time.
Kurt’s biggest problem will be to find a solution to the offensive thump and questionable pitching. It is still unknown how the supporters of the Angels will react to the news, as they are displeased with the owner, Arte Moreno, during his tenure in the organization.
