Brazilian winger Vinicius Jr broke down in tears as he expressed his struggle to stay motivated and enjoy playing football amid the recurring racist abuse he faces in Spain. Ahead of Brazil’s friendly international against Spain, the Real Madrid star revealed his frustration with fans continuously evading consequences for hurling racial slurs at him.
“I just want to play football but it’s hard to move forward… I feel less and less like playing (due to the racist abuse),” Vinicius stated during an emotional press conference, occasionally faltering through tears. Despite the challenges, he emphasized his determination to remain in Spain, refusing to give in to the desires of racists. “I will stay because that way the racists can continue to see my face more and more.”
Brazil’s match against Spain at Santiago Bernabeu on Tuesday is part of an anti-racism campaign, highlighting the ongoing battle against discrimination in football. Vinicius recalled a distressing incident from last May when a LaLiga game between Real Madrid and Valencia was interrupted due to racial abuse directed at him. Despite enduring such hardships, he continues to advocate for change, urging for stricter punishments to deter offenders.

“It’s getting sadder and sadder… and it is getting worse,” Vinicius lamented, addressing the lack of consequences for perpetrators. Despite the adversity, he remains resilient, asserting, “I want to keep fighting for it, but it’s hard. It doesn’t matter if I win or lose the games, I’m already a winner for being here.”
