Portugal forward Cristiano Ronaldo shares he is retiring from international football.
The 41-year-old superstar has netted 146 goals and played 234 matches for Portugal – both world records – since making his debut 23 years ago.
Cristiano walked out of the Selecao camp in September after being told he would not start the Nations League game vs. Denmark, resulting in a £ 215 fine and a 1-month suspension.
“To my people in my home country, it is time to hand back the number 7 kit of our national team,” Cristiano revealed on social media.
“It was not easy to do that, but it’s time, and a journey that started in August 2003 and changed my life forever, has come to an end.”
Tomorrow Portugal will announce their squad for October’s Nations League games – vs. Denmark at home and a visit to Wales.
The PFF claimed it would not “let this farewell take place without due tribute”.
Cristiano appeared in 6 Euros. Selecao finished 2nd in 2004 and won in 2016 but did not progress beyond the ½ finals of the World Championship during his career.
Ronaldo has been captain of his national team since 2008.
