A match-worn, autographed Michael Jordan road jersey from the 1998 NBA Finals has been privately sold for 14 million dollars, making it the highest price ever paid for such an item.
The buyer is Miami real estate investor Ron Firman. The red shirt is the 1 Jordan wore in Game 2 of that matchup on June 5, 1998; he and the Bulls defeated the Jazz in that match to tie the series 1-1.
The superstar and Chicago would go to triumph in 6 matches, the 6th and final title of his NBA career. That 1997-98 campaign was the subject of the 10-episode “Last Dance” documentary series that debuted 6 years ago.
The 14 million dollar is the 2nd-biggest known cost for a match-worn kit, behind 24.12 million dollars paid 2 years ago for the jersey worn by Babe Ruth of the NY Yankees when he hit the “called shot” home run vs. the Cubs at Wrigley Field in Game 3 of the 1932 World Series.
This sale marks at least the 3rd time a Jordan kit from the 1998 finals has fetched at least 10 million dollars.
Well, that didn’t take long.
