Liverpool are thinking about a new deal extension for captain Virgil van Dijk as his current contract will expire soon. The Reds are eager to keep the Dutch legend, while also negotiating a permanent transfer for the Catalan loanee Ronald Araujo.
Van Dijk’s current contract runs until the end of the campaign, and talks between the directors of the club have started over his future.
Despite turning 35, Virgil remains a crucial part of the 1st team. The Dutchman has played every single minute of their current EPL season so far.
The club wants to show him how important he is, and the discussions at the moment are to offer him an extension for an additional year, with the option for 1 more season.
Even if Virgil drops from the 1st team squad, the directors think that the Dutch captain will be valuable to mentor younger players in the club. And while the plans for Van Dijk’s extension have begun, Liverpool also started talks with Barcelona about buying Araujo at the end of the season.
It was a sign of Liverpool’s growing desperation that Virgil van Dijk spent the closing stages of their 1-0 loss against Arsenal playing as an auxiliary centre-forward.
By then, Andoni Iraola’s side had long since run out of attacking ideas and the Premier League champions held on to celebrate their first league victory at Anfield for 14 years.
A statement performance from the hosts never came. And this defeat showed Liverpool for what they are — a work in progress under Iraola with deficiencies that still need addressing.
