City went ahead after Phil Foden gave keeper Nick Pope no chance with a delightful shot following a brilliant solo run midway through the first half.
Foden (32) has scored the most Premier League goals for players born this century. Erling Haaland (27) and Bukayo Saka (27) are joint-second on that list.
Bernardo Silva made it 2-0 just a couple of minutes after coming on as a second-half substitute, replacing Belgian star Kevin De Bruyne.
Arsenal, who host Bournemouth on Saturday, top the standings with 60 points, two ahead of Manchester City. Newcastle are fifth on 41.
