Valeri Nichushkin netted two power-play goals, extending Nathan MacKinnon’s remarkable season-opening home points streak to 23 games, as the Colorado Avalanche secured a 3-0 victory over the Vegas Golden Knights on Wednesday night.
Alexandar Georgiev recorded his second shutout of the season with 25 saves, while Logan O’Connor contributed a third-period goal, and Mikko Rantanen provided a pair of assists, leading the Avalanche to their sixth win in seven games.
MacKinnon achieved a historic feat, becoming the fourth player in NHL history with a season-opening home points streak of at least 23 games.
Vegas faced a change in goaltending plans as Adin Hill, initially expected to start after recovering from a lower-body injury, was declared unavailable. Jiri Patera stepped in admirably, stopping 32 shots. Despite his efforts, the struggling Golden Knights have now lost seven of their last nine games.
