Lisandro Martinez returns after injury to lead the defense for the world champions

Argentina national coach Lionel Scaloni announced his squad for the upcoming Copa America tournament this summer. The team will aim for a third consecutive major tournament victory in the United States.

The world champions began their winning streak by defeating Brazil in the final of the 2021 tournament on home soil, setting the stage for their triumphant World Cup run in Qatar, where they edged out France on penalties in the final.

Inspirational captain Lionel Messi will return to add another medal to his illustrious collection, with head coach Lionel Scaloni tasked with blending youth and experience into a winning team once again. On May 20, Scaloni announced a 29-man squad for Argentina’s upcoming friendlies against Ecuador and Guatemala, which also serves as a provisional squad for the Copa America. Unsurprisingly, Messi was included on the list, but there were some unexpected selections.

Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez was named to the squad despite an injury-plagued season, while Paulo Dybala was notably absent. This exclusion could indicate that the Roma forward is being considered as one of Argentina’s over-age players for the Paris Olympic Games.
