The Italian side was leading 2-0 on aggregate, but failed to advance to the next round

Atletico Madrid managed to come back from two goals down on aggregate to eliminate Inter in the Champions League. Penalties decided the 1/8-final clash as the Madrid side managed to score a decisive goal three minutes before the end of regular time.

In the 33rd minute, the visitors took the lead. Following a well-built attack, Nicolo Barella was found with a pass inside the penalty area. The Italian midfielder then delivered an exquisite pass to Federico Dimarco, who left no chances for Oblak.

Just two minutes later, Atletico managed to equalize. The Inter defense made a serious error, and the ball found its way to Griezmann, who beat Sommer.

In the 76th minute, Lautaro Martinez brilliantly set up Thuram, but the latter sent his shot over the crossbar. Three minutes later, Memphis Depay came close to scoring, but Mateo Darmian was in the right place to prevent it.

In the 81st minute, Martinez once again demonstrated excellent vision of the game and set up Barella. The Italian advanced and took a shot, but his execution went straight into the hands of Oblak.

Four minutes later, Depay rattled the right post. In the 87th minute, Atletico Madrid completed the comeback. After a well-crafted attack, Koke set up Memphis Depay inside the penalty area. The Dutchman did not hesitate to shoot, and with a solid strike along the ground, he placed the ball irresistibly into the right corner.

After additional 30 minutes, the game went into penalties. Calhanoglu and Depay opened them with brilliant shots, but Alexis Sanchez and Saul were stopped in the second round. Oblak saved Klaassen’s penalty as well, while Riquelme scored.

Acerbi pulled Inter back level from the spot, but Correa fired the ball into the net to keep the advantage. Inter’s captain Lautaro Martinez stepped up to take the final penalty for his team, but shot it way over the target to gift Atletico the win.
