Premier League set to vote on spending cap limit

The Premier League is days away from pivotal decision as the majority of clubs push for the inclusion of a spending cap alongside the new “squad cost rules” set to debut in the 2025-26 season.

Under the proposed salary cap, each club’s investment in their team would be restricted, linked to a multiple of the amount received by the lowest-paid teams from broadcasting and league commercial deals.

Advocates of the cap believe it will provide a vital safeguard for the smooth implementation of the squad cost rule, which aligns clubs’ spending with their own revenues.

The cap would allow clubs to only spend five times the commercial and broadcast revenue of the lowest team in the division.

However, heavyweight clubs such as Chelsea, Manchester City, and Manchester United have voiced reservations, citing potential conflicts with British competition law.

Had the cap been enforced last season, it would have set the upper limit at £518 million, a staggering five times the £103.6 million earned by Southampton, who finished 20th, from centralized revenues.
