Emotional and unable to hold back tears, Carlos Alcaraz needed time to be able to speak after being defeated by Novak Djokovic in the men’s tennis singles final at the Paris Olympics today.
There would be no youngest-ever champ and no repeating Rafa Nadal’s feat of securing the gold medal for Spain in his 1st Olympics on singles.
Carlos won silver after a 7-6 (3), 7-6 (2) defeat against Nole at Court Philippe Chatrier, revealing the pressure of competing for Spain got to him.
“I believe I put more pressure on myself because I was representing my country and the Spaniards,” Carlos admitted. “I felt that I let the Spanish people down by losing the final.”
Alcaraz added he had not felt that type of pressure in the 4 Grand Slam finals that he appeared in and won all of them. The Spaniard thinks that the extra pressure cost him in the decisive moments in the match.
