Karim Benzema and Thibaut Courtois are expected to start the game at Anfield

Real Madrid midfielders Toni Kroos and Aurelien Tchouameni will miss the Spanish giants’ Champions League last-16 opener at Liverpool on Tuesday due to fitness problems.

However, French striker Karim Benzema, who missed Real’s 2-0 win over Osasuna in the Spanish La Liga on Saturday, was part of the 23-man squad confirmed to be flying to England.

Belgian goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has also recovered and will start, with Ferland Mendy the only other absentee from the senior squad.

Real’s Italian coach Carlo Ancelotti is likely to make a handful of changes to the side that overcame Osasuna at the weekend, having shuffled his pack with the first leg in mind.

The game at Anfield is a repeat of last season’s Champions League final in Paris.

Real and Liverpool are two of the most successful European clubs. The Spanish club won the European elite competition 14 times while the Reds lifted the most prestigious trophy six times.
