“It’s been a huge part of my life. It’s tough to say goodbye. It’s not easy,” Isner said. “But eventually, this day would come. It’s hard to prepare for the emotions of it.”
Isner did announce a week before the US Open that it will be his last event and fittingly ended his career in style – with 5 set thriller against fellow American Michael Mmoah. The 38-year-old would have liked to bow down with a victory, but nevertheless, he did receive a huge standing ovation.
A few hours later Isner was at it again, this time in the doubles, where he succumbed to another tie-break loss, which would prove to be his last outing.
“There’s, of course, a lot of disappointment with the result of my singles match today, but at the same time a lot of gratitude, as well, just to have one last time playing in an atmosphere like that.” the veteran said.
