2022 Indian Wells champion Taylor Fritz got off to a winning start at the Masters 1000 tournament.
In an all-American encounter, Fritz prevailed 4:6, 6:4, 6:3 over Ben Shelton in an hour and 53 minutes of play.
Fritz, who is ranked No. 4, was outplayed by his 20-year-old rival for long periods in the first half of the match, but was able to use his experience at key moments to turn the game around.
In the third round he will meet the Argentinian Sebastian Baez, who beat the Australian Rinky Hijikata 6:3, 6:1.
