Unified super middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez is set to fight undefeated contender Edgar Berlanga Jr. on September 14 in Las Vegas, as announced by Alvarez late on Thursday.
Alvarez, 34, became the unified 168 lb (76.2 kg) champion after a knockout victory over Caleb Plant in 2021 and has since defended his WBA (Super), WBC, WBO, and IBF belts four times.

His most recent defense was a unanimous decision win against Jaime Munguia in May. However, his IBF title may not be on the line for the upcoming fight against Berlanga. Reports suggest that the IBF will soon strip Alvarez of the title for not facing their mandatory challenger, William Scull.
Edgar Berlanga, 27, born in New York to Puerto Rican parents, boasts a perfect professional record of 22-0. Berlanga is coming off an impressive knockout victory over former IBO light heavyweight champion Padraig McCrory in February.
Dubbed by Berlanga as “the biggest fight in Puerto Rico vs Mexico boxing history,” the bout promises to be a significant event in the boxing calendar, highlighting the fierce rivalry and competitive spirit between the two nations.
