Dortmund top the standings with 46 points, three above champions Bayern Munich, who host Union Berlin on Sunday. Hoffenheim, who suffered their fifth consecutive league defeat, drop into the relegation zone.
Julian Brandt, scoring for a fourth time in a row in the Bundesliga, netted the only goal as he turned a Marco Reus cross in with his back minutes before half-time.
Dortmund scored again in the second half when Marius Wolf fired into the roof of the net at the near post, but it was ruled out for a Nico Schlotterbeck foul on Ihlas Bebou in the build-up.
Dortmund won their first nine games in a calendar year for the first time in the club’s history.
