Borussia Dortmund struggled to a 1-1 draw against Augsburg on Saturday, extending their winless streak to three league games and losing more ground in the title race.
The team from the Ruhr valley, with just one victory in their last seven Bundesliga matches, currently sits in fifth place with 26 points, trailing leaders Bayer Leverkusen by 10 points. Leverkusen, who will face Eintracht Frankfurt on Sunday, have the opportunity to widen the gap.
Champions Bayern Munich, in second place with 32 points, will host third-placed VfB Stuttgart on Sunday, with the league taking a break after next week’s fixtures until January 12th.
Augsburg took the lead in the 23rd minute when Ermedin Demirovic beat defender Nico Schlotterbeck for the ball and found the net. However, Donyell Malen equalized for Dortmund just 12 minutes later, combining effectively with Niclas Fuellkrug and scoring with a low shot.
Augsburg, under coach Jess Thorup, who has led them to just one loss in their last eight Bundesliga matches, had three consecutive chances at the start of the second half. Dortmund responded with a shot from Fuellkrug that narrowly missed the post.
Despite a series of chances throughout the second half, Dortmund came close to a last-gasp winner when Fuellkrug spectacularly connected with a Thomas Meunier cross in the 87th minute. However, his mid-air volley was tipped onto the post by Augsburg’s keeper Finn Dahmen, who had also denied Malen a minute earlier.
