Stefano Pioli’s men had most of the possession, but were unable to materialize it into something meaningful in the last third.
The visitors had to wait almost until the end, when new signing Christian Pulisic scored the much needed goal that edged them in front.
A couple of ill-tempered moments followed as goalkeeper Mike Maignan was shown a straight red card deep into stoppage time with Olivier Giroud having to step up in goal as Milan already used all of their subs. Ironically the opposing keeper also followed suit as he received a second yellow just 4 minutes later and both teams were reduced to 10 men.
Overall, an important win for the Rossoneri, who took full advantage of bitter rivals Inter earlier slip to go top of Serie A with 21 points, 2 ahead of second-placed Inter.
