American gymnast Jordan Chiles will be required to return the bronze medal she won in the floor exercise final at the Paris Olympics after the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) ruled that her score was incorrectly evaluated. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) confirmed on Sunday that the bronze medal will be reassigned to Romanian gymnast Ana Barbosu, following the decision by the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) to honor the court’s ruling.

The issue arose when U.S. team coach Cecile Landi filed an appeal to adjust Chiles’ score by adding 0.1 points during the competition. However, CAS determined that the appeal was filed outside the allowable 1-minute window, coming in at 1 minute and 4 seconds after the score was published. This timing discrepancy led to the CAS ruling that the original results should be reinstated.
As a result, Barbosu will be awarded the bronze medal, with her fellow Romanian gymnast Sabrina Maneca-Voinia moving up to fourth place, and Chiles being placed in fifth. The IOC announced that they will coordinate with the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee to arrange the return of Chiles’ medal and will work with the Romanian Olympic Committee to discuss a ceremony to honor Barbosu’s achievement.
