Dusan Vlahovic oppened the scoring for the visiting side from the penalty spot on the brink of half-time, after Manuel Gulde received a second booking for handing the ball inside the penalty area. That left the German team with a man down and a goal down, which made their task incredibly difficult.
Freiburg, who lost the first leg 1-0 and needed two goal to send the game to extra time, threw all their forces at Wojciech Szczesny goal in an attempt to turn the tie around.
But the Italian team kept things under control and was never really in danger of conceding. Federico Chiesa, who came on as a 70th minute substitution in for Vlahovic, sealed the deal second before the final whistle with a clean strike past goalkeeper Mark Flekken to send the Old lady to the last 8 of the Europa League.
