It was the worst possible start for the hosts as they were reduced to ten men inside just 15 minutes, when captain Mats Hummels saw straight red.
It went downhill from there as the yellow team fell 1-0 behind through an unfortunate own goal from Ramy Bensebaini.
However, a glimmer of a hope was restored as substitute Niklas Sule drew the game level deep into stoppage time of the first half.
In the second half Leipzig restored their dominance, aided by being a man up, and in the 54th minute Christoph Baumgarten put them in front.
In the dying moments of the match Leipzig Yussuf Poulsen made it 3-1, before Dortmund pulled one back alamost instantly, but it proved to be a mere consolation.
