The news broke out during player’s tour issued by commissioner Jay Monahan, who expressed his thankfulness for Mcllroy’s commitment.
The 34-year-old was seen as one of the strongest oppositions against LIV Golf, which merged with Saudi Arabia funds and was regarded as PGA’s most prominent figures.
However, Mcllroy admitted that he started to feel like a “sacrificial lamb”, following the infamous deal.
“Rory’s resignation letter, which he sent to the full board, clearly stated that the difficult decision was made due to professional and personal commitments,” Monahan wrote.
McIlroy had been part of the tour’s Player Advisory Council between 2019 and 2021, playing the role of a chairman for the final year of that spell. He then became a player director on the board.
