There will be no more time wasting, no more shifts and bigger bases

MLB has introduced a set of new rules for the 2023 season. Here is a quick look what they have in store:

PITCH CLOCK

The pitch clock eliminates the time wasted between pitches.Players will have 30 seconds at their disposal to resume play between batters. The pitcher must start his delivery before the clock ticks down to 0. After a pitch, the clock starts again when the pitcher has the ball back, the catcher and batter are in the circle around home plate, and play is ready to resume.

The clock will be situated behind home plate and beyond the outfield so that both hitters and pitchers could see them.

LESS PITCHER DISENGAGEMENTS

Pitchers from now on may only disengage from the pitching rubber  twice per plate appearance, either for a timeout or to attempt a picoff throw. After a pitcher has used his two disengagements, he can still attempt a pickoff, but has to be successful, otherwise his throws will not count. If the baserunner gets back safely, a balk is assessed and the runner advances.

SHIFT LIMITS

The new rule states that all four infielders must have both feet within the outside boundary of the infield and two infielders must be on each side of second base when a pitch is delivered. Players will not be allowed to sprint from one side of second base to the other after the pitch is released, and umpires will be given permission to ensure players are following the spirit of the rule.

BIGGER BASES

And finally new larger bases have been introduced to improve player safety and to stimulate more stolen-base attempts. The bases are now 18-square inches, in comparison to the 15-inches used up to now. Home plate is now three inches closer to first and third base, while the corner bases are now 4 1/2 inches closer to second base.
