Woods shrugged off criticism for his bad-taste tampon prank to remind the world just how good he can be

In-form World No.3 Jon Rahm is eyeing a return to the number one spot after posting a six-under 65 as he started to gap the field at the PGA Tour’s Genesis Invitational at Riviera in Los Angeles.

The 28-year-old Spaniard capped a bogey-free round with a 25-foot birdie putt that gave him a 15-under total and three-shot lead over Max Homa (69) as they duelled on Saturday.

Rahm has been the best player in golf over the last six months.

He has finished among the top-10 in nine consecutive tournaments, winning four of them, dating to the BMW PGA Championship on the DP World Tour.

Former world number one Tiger Woods has shrugged off criticism for his bad-taste tampon prank, risen above the lingering effects of a near-fatal 2021 car crash and demonstrated once again why golf may never see his like again.

In a stunning round, he nearly posted an albatross while shooting one of the lowest third-round scores to the delight of his big gallery.

The 47-year-old Woods, competing in his first tournament in seven months, jumped 32 spots up the leaderboard after carding a four-under-par 67 at Riviera, lower than every other player except Denny McCarthy (64) and leader Rahm.

The round left the 15-time major champion tied 26th at three-under – 12 shots behind Rahm – in his first start of the season and all the more impressive considering he played only nine competitive rounds last year after sustaining traumatic injuries to his right leg in a 2021 car accident.
