The American opened up the first round with a long birdie and is in the lead

Xander Schauffele started the opening day at the US Open emphatically by bagging a 40-foot birdie putt and didn’t stop there as he got to 3-under par, which eventually secured him the first play in the first round.

The No.6 in the world is searching for his first major trophy and is joint in first with Jacob Solomon and Dylan Wu, who also had an impressive outing.

Rickie Fowler briefly joined them before dropping below after a bogey on the rugged par-4 17 undermined him at 2 under.

The course was severely softened after an early mist fell on the Los Angeles Club, resulting in 36 players getting level on even par or better.
