Saul Alvarez emerged victorious on points in a hard-fought match against John Ryder to retain his undisputed middle-weight title in front of a packed 50, 000 spectators arena in Guadalajara.
It seemed the Mexican had clinched victory as early as the fifth round when he knocked down his British oponnent, but Ryder, however, showed real grit and determination and continued the fight right until the end.
Eventually it came down to points as the defining factor, which proved enough for Alvarez.
It was his 59th victory in his career, which has only 2 losses and 2 draws.
“I’m happy with the fight. I won and I’m happy people had a great fight,” Alvarez said. “He’s a strong fighter. I knew that; I’m not surprised about it.”
Ryder registered his 6th loss from 38 games, coming short in a title match for a second time, after succumbing to Callum Smith for the WBA “Super” title in 2019.
“I’ve dared to do and I’ve come up short. The overriding thing is I’m gutted.” he said.
