However, everything changed in the 2nd set, and Gauff converted a crucial break to make it 3-1 games for her. The single break was enough for the young American to close the set 6-3 after saving 3 break points during the set to tie the result and force a deciding set.
The 19-year-old American started the 3rd set fantastic as she won the first 4 games and led 4-0. After that, her Belarusian opponent won her 1st game in the set and took a medical timeout. After the timeout, Sabalenka broke Coco’s serve to make it 4-2. Despite that, Gauff showed that she is the better player tonight, and she won the next 2 games to defeat Aryna and triumphed with the US Open in New York.
Coco Gauff is in tears as she becomes the first teenager to win the US Open since Serena Williams in 1999.
It’s been a tough road, but it was all worth it.
Soak it all in.
You earned every minute of this. 🥹❤️
