World No.1 Novak Djokovic will not participate in the upcoming Madrid Open due to fitness issues, it was announced by the Spanish organizers on Saturday.
“Wishing you a speedy recovery, we hope to see you back on court as soon as possible, Nole.” wrote the Madrid Open page on Twitter.
The cause of the withdrawal is still unknown in detail but it is believed that it is the elbow the issue, as the Serb recently commented on how it has hampered him playing and has potentially led to his shock exit at Monte Carlo.
Djokovic joins Rafael Nadal as the two major absentees after the Spaniard announced his withdrawal earlier this week due to extensive hip injury, picked up at the Australian Open in January.
Nadal participation in the French Open, starting from May 28 is still in doubt.
Djokovic, on the other hand has endured a sloppy run of results lately, crashing out in the last 16 of the Monte Carlo and losing to a fellow Serb Dusan Lajovic in the Srpska Open. It was a first loss against a compatriot for 11 years.
The Madrid Open starts on Monday.
